November 4, 2011—Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that
The National Law Journal has named partner
Amit P. Mehta to its 2011 list of “Minority 40 Under 40” lawyers. Mr. Mehta made the list in recognition of his key role in defending several of the firm’s high-profile criminal matters, including the recently dismissed charges against former International Monetary Fund President Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
“Amit is a rising star not just at Zuckerman Spaeder, but also in the competitive white collar bar,” said firm chairman
Graeme W. Bush. “He has worked on some of the firm’s most important cases and has been instrumental to our success in incredibly challenging circumstances. The firm is fortunate to have young attorneys of his talent in our partnership and I expect that we will continue to see Amit excel. We are very pleased that Amit’s talent and success have been recognized by
The National Law Journal.”
The National Law Journal also recognized Mr. Mehta’s successful representation of former Congressman Tom Feeney in connection with a grand jury investigation into statements he made to the House Ethics Committee concerning a privately funded 2003 Scotland trip. Mr. Mehta was the primary author of the briefs in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which ruled that Rep. Feeney’s statements were protected under the Speech or Debate Clause—a significant decision allowing members of Congress to speak freely during ethics probes regarding legislative matters. In addition,
The National Journal piece called attention to Mr. Mehta’s representation of Yaming Hanson in a case that involved unique questions concerning the interpretation of export control regulations.
Mr. Mehta, a former staff attorney for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense, complex civil litigation and appellate litigation. He has represented public figures, corporate officials, and companies charged with or targeted for criminal prosecution in high-stakes cases involving fraud, bribery, and public corruption.
Benchmark Litigation named Mr. Mehta a “Future Star” in its 2011 ranking of U.S. litigation firms and lawyers.
Mr. Mehta currently serves on the board of directors for the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to correcting and preventing wrongful convictions in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. He is former co-chair of the DC Bar’s Criminal and Individual Rights Steering Committee.
