Amit Mehta is an experienced advocate who focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense, complex civil litigation, and appellate litigation. He has represented public figures, corporate officials, and companies charged with or targeted for criminal prosecution in cases involving fraud, bribery, public corruption, money laundering, and violations of sanctions and export control regimes. Notably, he was part of the defense team that won an acquittal for the former president of the Salt Lake City Olympic Bid Committee against federal charges of racketeering and fraud. A former public defender, Mr. Mehta has tried numerous serious felony and misdemeanor cases to verdict before juries and judges.
In addition to his extensive criminal trial experience, Mr. Mehta has an active civil practice, in which he has represented parties in a variety of matters, such as securities fraud actions, antitrust claims, and partnership disputes.
Prior to joining Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, Mr. Mehta was a staff attorney for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. Mr. Mehta previously clerked for the Honorable Susan Graber in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Portland, OR.
Mr. Mehta currently serves on the board of directors for the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project and is the former co-chair of the District of Columbia Bar’s Criminal Law and Individual Rights Section Steering Committee.

Represented a former congressman in litigation before the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit over the scope of the Speech and Debate Clause privilege.

Defended a client in a prosecution for violation of federal export laws.

Currently represents a businessman accused of engaging in commercial activity and providing consulting services to a foreign government in violation of United States’ sanctions regulations.

Currently represents a former chief financial officer in a civil enforcement action brought by the SEC alleging violations of the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws.

Represented the board of directors of a publicly held company under investigation for possible violations of antitrust laws.

Defended the former president of the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee against federal fraud and bribery charges arising out of the competition for the 2002 Winter Games.
