Zuckerman Spaeder LLP’s Baltimore office was founded in 1987 by Herbert Better, a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland who served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney and Court-Appointed U.S. Attorney. Now led by managing partner Martin S. Himeles, Jr., the attorneys in the Baltimore office include former Assistant U.S. Attorneys and federal and state judicial law clerks who have been recognized for their excellence in The Best Lawyers in America, Benchmark: Litigation Guide, and other similar publications.

The attorneys in our Baltimore office represent national and regional entities, as well as individuals in a wide variety of complex civil, regulatory, and criminal matters. The firm’s clients include public and private companies, their executives, and committees of their boards of directors; law firms and lawyers in Baltimore and elsewhere; nonprofit institutions; hospitals and other health care providers; public officials; plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of complex class actions arising under federal and state law (including the federal Medicaid, RESPA and securities fraud statutes); and individuals with claims arising under the federal pension statutes, including such diverse clients as labor union executives and retired professional football players.

Over the years, the lawyers in our Baltimore office have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to public service and have become leaders in the community. Four of our Baltimore partners have served as president of the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Our lawyers also have served as members of the U.S. District Court’s Criminal Justice Act Panel, representing indigent federal criminal defendants, and in leadership positions on the boards of cultural and charitable organizations in the Baltimore community. Continuing this tradition of community service, the office invests in the youth of Baltimore through two unique and rewarding programs: the Public Justice Center, which helps secure education and health care for homeless and indigent children; and the Baltimore Urban Debate League, which provides competitive public policy debate instruction and college access programs to elementary, middle, and high school students in the city’s public schools.
