Cy Smith specializes in complex civil and criminal cases where the stakes are high and winning is essential. With more than 15 years of experience as a trial lawyer, he has represented plaintiffs and defendants in complex securities, products liability, professional malpractice, and business tort cases.

Mr. Smith has also represented clients who are witnesses, targets, and defendants in federal investigations and administrative proceedings concerning insider trading, money laundering, false statements to the government, insurance fraud, and other matters. He has also tried to verdict a number of multi-month criminal cases in several federal courts.

Mr. Smith has handled a wide variety of plaintiff's cases resulting in multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements. His work includes medical, legal, and accounting malpractice cases; shareholder derivative suits and securities matters; defamation claims; a wrongful death claim against a major automaker; and a wide variety of other cases. Here are just a few of the cases in which he has been involved:

• Counsel for the shareholder derivative plaintiff in a case against the directors, senior officers and accountants of a West Virginia bank, resulting in a $10 million-plus settlement because of the bank's enormous losses from unsecured loans to an unscrupulous mobile home retailer.
• Counsel in a Florida state court will contest for a son of Victor Posner, the reclusive Baltimore-born real estate tycoon and corporate raider, who died leaving an estate valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Most of the estate was left under a suspiciously procured will to the decedent's sometime girlfriend and "business advisor."
• Plaintiffs' counsel in a case resulting in one of the largest ERISA judgments ever in the 4th Circuit — close to $3 million — after a 7 1/2-year battle with the pension plan. The plaintiffs won enforcement of a highly favorable pension plan amendment, defeating claims that the amendment was the product of a federal labor racketeering conspiracy.

Mr. Smith has authored articles on an array of subjects ranging from bankruptcy to land use to consumer product safety and has spoken on litigation topics as varied as death penalty practice and the Federal Tort Claims Act.
