ZUCKERMAN SPAEDER NAMED TOP FIVE LITIGATION BOUTIQUE BY THE AMERICAN LAWYER

Roger Spaeder practices complex civil and criminal litigation with a concentration on the defense of federal enforcement investigations and prosecutions.

Mr. Spaeder's white collar practice includes service as Special Counsel to the Executive Office of the President of the United States, defending allegations that the White House Counsel's Office obstructed justice in a civil proceeding. He successfully defended a former U.S. Secretary of Energy on bribery allegations under the Independent Counsel Statute; he represented the former General Counsel of the CIA in an investigation of unauthorized release of classified information; he regularly represents corporations and their senior executives in investigations of criminal securities fraud, government contracting fraud, health care fraud, export licensing violations, tax evasion, bank fraud, and antitrust violations. His post-Enron experience includes the representation of high-profile public company executives before the SEC and federal grand juries.

His civil litigation practice includes the defense of federal antitrust litigation, shareholder class and derivative actions, false claims actions brought by qui tam relators, and business tort litigation.

A native of Ohio, Mr. Spaeder attended college and received his undergraduate degree in mathematics in 1965. For the next three years, he was a mathematician with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Following law school, he was a law clerk in the Office of U.S. Attorney (now Judge) Thomas A. Flannery, and from 1971 to 1976, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Spaeder has been a faculty member of the Attorney General's Advocacy Institute and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He was an adjunct faculty member at the Georgetown University Law Center and the Harvard Law School Litigation Program. He was Cardozo Prize Judge at the Yale Law School in 1992, and his articles have appeared in The National Law Journal, American Banker, Corporate Criminal Liability Reporter, and Criminal Justice magazine.

For over a decade, Mr. Spaeder chaired an annual symposium on federal enforcement sponsored by the Georgetown University Law Center and the ABA's Litigation Section, featuring senior federal enforcement officials and prominent practitioners in white collar criminal defense. He is profiled in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America.
