Negotiating with the government to obtain immunity in exchange for testimony in a judicial proceeding confronts a defense attorney with difficult decisions. In 2009, Roger Spaeder and Matthew Kaiser released an update on an article discussing some of the legal questions raised by such negotiations and provides practical suggestions to defense counsel in the new Department of Justice Manual 2nd edition.
