In their Champion Magazine article, “Lawful Use of Deadly Force by the Police: What’s Wrong in Ferguson and Elsewhere,” Zuckerman Spaeder LLP Partner Steven Salky, Federal Public Defender’s Office Staff Attorney Jacob Schuman, and Jenner & Block Associate Keisha N. Stanford say that a Missouri grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson reflects the failure of the law to properly calibrate the permissible use of deadly force by police officers when attempting an arrest. Using the case of Officer Wilson’s shooting of Michael Brown as an example, the authors go on to explain why the laws regarding police use of deadly force need reform.
