Located at the heart of international business and finance, Zuckerman Spaeder LLP’s New York office successfully handles complex matters facing corporations, executives, and other individuals. The firm’s New York-based lawyers have a wealth of experience dealing with government and regulatory investigations, commercial and financial services industry litigation, and white-collar criminal defense. They have also served in advisory roles to hedge funds, publicly traded corporations, and individuals trying to navigate the thicket of legal, regulatory, and competitive obstacles.

Zuckerman Spaeder opened its New York office in 2004, and has since been involved in many of the city’s most topical, high-profile cases, including the defense of former IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn in his recently dismissed criminal case and ongoing civil case, and former NYSE Compensation Committee Chairman Kenneth ‎Langone in the highly publicized litigation over Dick Grasso’s compensation (the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court dismissed all claims against Langone).

The attorneys in this office are leading members of the New York bar who draw upon their experiences in government and business to advise clients in complex, bet-the-company cases. The office is led by Steven M. Cohen, who recently served as the senior adviser to New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, as well as Gov. Cuomo’s Counselor and Chief of Staff in the Attorney General’s Office. Other New York partners bring a similar depth of experience from ‎government service. For example, partner Paul Shechtman was Director ‎of Criminal Justice for the State of New York under Gov. George E. ‎Pataki, Counsel to the District Attorney of New York County, and a clerk ‎for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger. Partner Andrew E. Tomback was a senior advisor to the Undersecretary ‎for Enforcement at the Department of the Treasury. All three served as ‎assistant U.S. attorneys in the Southern District of New York, with Mr. ‎Cohen and Mr. Shechtman also serving ‎as division chiefs‎. ‎ ‎

Zuckerman Spaeder’s New York attorneys also have corporate and financial services experience. Partner C. Evan Stewart served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary for The Nikko Securities Co. International, Inc.; as a Director of Nikko Financial Services, Inc.; and as First Vice President and Associate General Counsel of E.F. Hutton & Company, Inc. Mr. Tomback served as Deputy General Counsel of the Resolution Trust ‎Corporation‎.

The firm’s attorneys have continued their records of accomplishment in private practice. They have received numerous industry recognitions for their work, including from Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, Benchmark Litigation, Super Lawyers, National Law Journal, and New York Law Journal.

As active members of the New York legal community, Zuckerman Spaeder lawyers often take on leadership roles in professional organizations, such as the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Federal Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Rules of Evidence, ‎New York State Permanent Sentencing Review Commission, New York ‎State Bar Association Task Force on Government Ethics, Advisory Panel for the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of New York, and Securities Regulation Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. The firm’s partners have taught at many of the city’s law schools, including Columbia Law School, Cornell University Law School, Fordham University School of Law, and Brooklyn Law School. The firm’s attorneys are also frequent contributors to legal publications such as the New York Law Journal, New York Business Law Journal, Federal Bar Council Quarterly, and New York Criminal Law Newsletter.

In addition to the attorneys resident in the New York office, Zuckerman Spaeder has more than a dozen attorneys in its other three offices who are licensed to practice law in New York and who regularly litigate in the state’s courts. Our New York lawyers work closely with attorneys across the firm, allowing us to apply the unique skills of individual attorneys to serve our clients, no matter where they are located.
