Sara Alpert Lawson


Sara Alpert Lawson represents individual and institutional clients in criminal defense, civil litigation, and government investigations.

Sara’s practice focuses on complex disputes and investigations. She defends individuals and companies against allegations of fraud, particularly fraud matters involving the False Claims Act and other federal health care fraud statutes.

She also has represented clients in matters involving international trade, and intellectual property protection and litigation. She works closely with clients and seeks to deliver positive outcomes through creative problem-solving.

Prior to joining Zuckerman Spaeder, Sara was a litigation associate at the Lauro Law Firm, where she practiced white collar criminal defense. She also previously served as sole corporate counsel for JLM Industries, Inc., an international chemical trading and distribution company.

As in-house counsel, she advised company management on business transactions and drafted complex business agreements, in addition to representing the company in civil litigation.

  • Currently representing former executives of a health maintenance organization in connection with a government investigation in the Middle District of Florida.
  • Represented several employees of a homebuilder in connection with a mortgage fraud investigation arising out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Due to diligent efforts to understand the clients and their business, was able to keep all clients from being prosecuted.
  • Currently representing a freight forwarding company in connection with a joint investigation in the Middle District of Florida by the Department of Commerce and Department of Homeland Security.
  • Successfully defended two individuals being investigated in connection with a health care fraud investigation in the Middle District of Florida. Again, due to diligent efforts to understand the what had occurred and the clients themselves, was able to keep both clients from being prosecuted.
  • Successfully defended a college student sued for copyright infringement in the Middle District of Florida resulting in a settlement that allowed the student to continue his academic career and which did not impact his future career prospects.
  • Represented an attorney implicated in a mortgage fraud investigation arising out of the Middle District of Florida. Obtained a grant of immunity for the attorney.
  • Represented an emergency physician practice confronted with a potential whistleblower suit alleging violations of the False Claims Act, the Stark law, and over-billing. Conducted an internal investigation on the practice’s behalf and assisted the practice with self-disclosure of the investigation results to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which resulted in no penalties assessed against the physician practice.
