Sara Alpert Lawson


Sara’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, complex civil disputes, and investigations. She has successfully represented clients in a variety of matters, ranging from  representing individuals and companies against allegations of fraud, issues related to the False Claims Act and federal health care fraud statutes in home health, managed care, and hospital-based settings, export control investigations, and intellectual property infringement to litigating a Florida Public Records Act issue against a Florida agency.

She also has represented clients in commercial civil litigation matters, including those involving intellectual property protection and actuarial malpractice.

Sara is recognized in the most recent edition of The Best Lawyers in America for White-Collar Criminal Defense.

In addition to her practice, Sara has been active in pro bono efforts, particularly those involving foster youth, and has served on the Board of Directors for Bay Area Legal Services for over five years.

In 2015, Sara received the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Pro Bono Service Award. Sara is a member of the firm’s Professional Development Committee, the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Federal Bar Association’s Staying in the Game Program Committee, the Women’s White Collar Defense Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Hillsborough County Bar Association.

Sara earned her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law, where she served as an Editor for the University of Maryland Law Journal of Race, Religion, Gender, and Class. She received her B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University, majoring in Political Science.

Prior to joining Zuckerman Spaeder, Sara practiced white collar criminal defense at another boutique litigation firm and also was in-house Corporate Counsel for an international chemical trading company.

  • Currently representing former executives of a health maintenance organization in connection with a government investigation in the Middle District of Florida.
  • Represented several employees of a homebuilder in connection with a mortgage fraud investigation arising out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Due to diligent efforts to understand the clients and their business, was able to keep all clients from being prosecuted.
  • Currently representing a freight forwarding company in connection with a joint investigation in the Middle District of Florida by the Department of Commerce and Department of Homeland Security.
  • Successfully defended two individuals being investigated in connection with a health care fraud investigation in the Middle District of Florida. Again, due to diligent efforts to understand the what had occurred and the clients themselves, was able to keep both clients from being prosecuted.
  • Successfully defended a college student sued for copyright infringement in the Middle District of Florida resulting in a settlement that allowed the student to continue his academic career and which did not impact his future career prospects.
  • Represented an attorney implicated in a mortgage fraud investigation arising out of the Middle District of Florida. Obtained a grant of immunity for the attorney.
  • Represented an emergency physician practice confronted with a potential whistleblower suit alleging violations of the False Claims Act, the Stark law, and over-billing. Conducted an internal investigation on the practice’s behalf and assisted the practice with self-disclosure of the investigation results to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which resulted in no penalties assessed against the physician practice.
