Thomas B. Mason focuses his practice in the areas of professional responsibility and legal ethics and he is the chair of Zuckerman Spaeder LLP’s Legal Profession and Ethics Practice. He also has extensive experience in white collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation.
Mr. Mason advises and represents attorneys and law firms on a variety of ethics matters: conflicts of interest, confidentiality, disciplinary investigations and prosecutions, partner departures and law firm breakups. He served on the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee from 2002 to 2008. He is currently Chair of the D.C. Bar Legal Ethics Committee. He has spoken on ethics issues before sections of the American Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar and at numerous seminars. He is currently an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University School of Law where he teaches ethics and professional responsibility.
In addition to his legal ethics work, Mr. Mason represents a wide variety of clients in white collar criminal litigation including foreign nationals, government contractors and employees, and Internet companies.
Prior to private practice, Mr. Mason gained invaluable experience and developed his trial skills working for the Federal Public Defender for the District of Maryland, where he represented clients in a wide variety of cases, including espionage, civil rights, mail and wire fraud, and controlled substance prosecutions. In 1987, Mr. Mason joined the District of Columbia Public Defender Service where he also engaged in an intensive criminal trial and appellate practice.
Mr. Mason has taught trial practice in a number of settings, including the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He served as adjunct professor of law at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University from 1986 to 1990. He served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Frank Kaufman in United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
