Zuckerman Spaeder LLP was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1975. Located in the heart of downtown Washington, this office remains the firm’s largest, with more than 80 attorneys. All the diverse practice areas Zuckerman Spaeder engages in are represented in its Washington office, which include: appellate, bankruptcy, business counseling, civil litigation, class action, food and drug, government ethics and election law, insurance, legal profession and ethics, Native American law, plaintiff's litigation, real estate, securities litigation, tax litigation, and white collar criminal defense and government investigations. Pro bono work, including representing indigent death penalty defendants and those in domestic abuse cases, is also a priority here as in all of our offices.

Attorneys at the firm's Washington office have previously served as prosecutors, public defenders, federal regulators, congressional staffers, and law clerks in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. Many attorneys are current or former professors at area law schools, including Georgetown University Law Center, The George Washington University Law School, American University School of Law, and Columbus School of Law at Catholic University. Our attorneys have been featured in local and national media, and have been named among the region’s top lawyers in publications such as Legal Times, National Law Journal, Washingtonian magazine, and Washington Business Journal.

Community Involvement

The nation’s capital is Zuckerman Spaeder’s founding office—our first home. It’s also a large, diverse community with myriad needs. Zuckerman Spaeder’s people make it their business to help the community meet those needs. In addition to providing pro bono representation, our attorneys and staff also serve on local nonprofit boards, volunteer, and contribute to the community in many other ways. Here are just a few examples:

• Through the D.C. Legal Aid Society’s Appellate Advocacy Project, we help indigent clients in cases involving custody, domestic abuse, and landlord-tenant disputes.
• We helped establish a Bankruptcy Pro Bono Task Force to help the growing numbers of individuals and families affected by the sub-prime lending crisis obtain counsel.
• We work with Women Empowered Against Violence (WEAVE) to represent victims of domestic violence.
• Facilitating Leadership in Youth (FLY), a nonprofit organization helping underprivileged D.C. youth in education and leadership, was founded by an attorney in our D.C. office.
• Our expertise helps support the board of Horton’s Kids, Inc., a nonprofit organization that serves low-income children in D.C.’s troubled Ward 8.
• Our office drafted and helped with passage of the D.C. Innocence Protection Act, which provides for post-conviction DNA testing and actual innocence challenges at any time.
• City students benefit from attorney volunteers in the Mock Oral Argument Program.
• We participate in the annual MS Walk, and have twice been the top local fundraising team.
