With a focus on coverage disputes under liability and property insurance contracts, William A. Schreiner Jr. represents insurers in coverage disputes in a wide variety of circumstances. For liability insurers, these cases have dealt with coverage for asbestos and silica claims, environmental remediation claims, and “blast faxing” and advertising injury claims, among others. Mr. Schreiner has represented property insurers in cases involving claims for buildings damaged by weather and terrorism, as well as “business interruption,” “wear and tear,” and business risk exclusion claims. While litigation has taken him into federal, state, and bankruptcy courts around the country, he also analyzes coverage issues and counsels insurers on the appropriate strategic choices to be made before claims enter litigation.
Mr. Schreiner also represents directors, officers, and companies seeking coverage under directors and officers (D&O) liability policies. Using his experience in insurance coverage, Mr. Schreiner works with policyholders to develop and execute a strategy for obtaining the benefits available to them under their insurance policies. This includes an assessment of available coverage, an evaluation of the merits of the policyholders’ claims and the insurer’s defenses, and a plan to obtain the most benefits possible in the most efficient way, whether through litigation, negotiation, or some combination of methods.
Bringing his experience to the classroom, Mr. Schreiner has taught “Insurance Law for Litigators and Corporate Lawyers” as an adjunct lecturer at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University since 2008.
Prior to joining Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, Mr. Schreiner served as an associate attorney with Hunton & Williams LLP, focusing on insurance coverage disputes.
Mr. Schreiner earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from the State University of New York College at Oswego in 1992, and a J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1997. While at New York University School of Law, he served as articles editor at the Environmental Law Journal, as well as news editor for the school newspaper, The Commentator.
Mr. Schreiner is a member of the American Bar Association, New York Bar Association, Louisiana Bar Association, and the Defense Research Institute. He is also president of the board of directors of the Oswego Alumni Association, president of the Friends of Fort Ward of Alexandria, VA, and serves on the City of Alexandria’s Fort Ward Advisory Commission.
