Cy Smith Named a Winner of The Daily Record's 2009 Leadership Awards

Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that The Daily Record has named partner Cy Smith a winner of its 2009 Leadership in Law Awards. The Daily Record’s Leadership in Law Awards recognize Maryland attorneys who have devoted time and energy to bettering the legal profession and the community in which they live and work, in addition to mentoring future professionals and community leaders. The winners will be honored at an awards luncheon on November 20, 2009.

With more than two decades experience as a trial lawyer, Mr. Smith has represented plaintiffs and defendants in complex securities, class action, sports law, products liability, professional malpractice, and business tort cases. He has also tried to verdict lengthy criminal cases in several federal courts.

In addition to his demanding legal practice, Mr. Smith is an active volunteer in the Baltimore community. As a member of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland’s Criminal Justice Act Panel, Mr. Smith has taken on numerous court appointed cases for individuals unable to afford legal counsel. He has also represented several Baltimore public school teachers who had been reassigned or disciplined due to their union activities. In addition to using his professional skills to serve the Baltimore community, Mr. Smith is also active with Beth Am Synagogue, where he is currently First Vice President and is expected to begin a term as President in 2011.

Mr. Smith is also active in several nonprofit organizations that serve the youth of Baltimore. He is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Urban Debate League, an organization that provides competitive public policy debate instruction and college access programs to more than 1,000 middle and high school students in the city’s middle and high public schools. Mr. Smith also serves as a mentor and advisor to the debate team at Baltimore City College High School. Previously, Mr. Smith was a member of the board of directors (including serving as chairman in 2003 and 2004) for the Lawyers’ Campaign for the College Bound Foundation, which provides scholarship and mentoring for Baltimore City public school students to attend college.
