Top Winner, Leadership in Law Award, The Daily Record

Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that The Daily Record has named Gregg L. Bernstein, a partner in the firm’s Baltimore office, a winner of its 2015 Leadership in Law Award. The Leadership in Law Award honors legal professionals for their outstanding work throughout Maryland.

Mr. Bernstein has more than 30 years of experience in criminal and civil litigation in federal and state courts, including matters involving white collar defense, internal investigations, public corruption, environmental crime and commercial litigation.

Mr. Bernstein rejoined Zuckerman Spaeder LLP in January after serving a four-year term as the Baltimore City State’s Attorney and is widely regarded as one of the top litigation attorneys in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has represented numerous clients in high-profile cases including a former state senator who was acquitted of bribery and extortion charges; the president of a large manufacturing company who was acquitted of perjury charges arising from a federal antitrust investigation; and one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers in multidistrict litigation arising from dozens of federal civil RICO actions. Additionally, Mr. Bernstein is retained as a consultant to provide assistance to law enforcement and prosecution agencies throughout the country.

During his time as the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Mr. Bernstein spearheaded a number of initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the office and improve public safety throughout the city. Most notably, he created a Major Investigations Unit to pursue repeat, violent offenders; established community prosecution teams dedicated to each of the city’s neighborhoods; and launched a Special Victim’s Unit to prosecute sexual assault and domestic violence offenses more effectively. Additionally, Mr. Bernstein expanded the State’s Attorney’s Office’s diversion programs for select nonviolent defendants.

The Daily Record recognized 27 members of the legal community throughout Maryland for their outstanding work. Nominations were received from The Daily Record’s readers in addition to area law firms, bar associations, chambers of commerce and the business and legal communities at large. An external panel of judges and a representative of The Daily Record reviewed the nominations and made the selections. Winners will be recognized at a reception on Nov. 19.
