Press Release
The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) has again recognized Zuckerman Spaeder for its exceptional commitment to pro bono work, honoring the firm with the 2025 Beacon of Justice Award. The annual award recognizes law firms that have “demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision, dedication, and achievement in promoting and supporting equal justice.”
This year’s award highlights legal work in 2024 that addressed urgent challenges facing families and communities, helping them ensure their long-term stability and resilience.
“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition for our pro bono work, which reflects our deep commitment to using our skills for the greater good,” said Zuckerman Spaeder partner and pro bono practice co-chair Devon Galloway. “At a time when access to justice and support is more critical than ever, we’re proud to stand alongside communities and individuals facing systemic challenges – and to deliver lasting, life-changing results.”
Over the past year, Zuckerman Spaeder attorneys have devoted substantial time and resources to high-impact matters. In one notable effort, at the request of Legal Aid DC, the firm prepared to file suit against the D.C. Mayor’s Office over delays in implementing a 10% increase in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The firm’s actions prompted a reversal from the D.C. Mayor’s Office that released essential food benefits to thousands of D.C. families – a result praised by local officials as “a victory for thousands of families, children, seniors and people with disabilities.”
In support of the firm’s nomination, Legal Aid DC praised Zuckerman Spaeder’s work on the matter, stating, “We have such confidence in their work, we often ask them to handle and consult on some of our most important, difficult, and time-sensitive cases.” The firm has “positively impacted thousands of individuals and families and significantly shaped the law to the benefit of low or no-income residents.”
Similarly, following the firm’s successful challenge to excessive government fees that restrict public access to information, the ACLU of Maryland called the firm’s work “truly exemplary,” noting that it “set a critical precedent that will help protect against similar abuses.”
In another pro bono matter, a Zuckerman Spaeder team represented two tenants who lost their personal belongings under a city ordinance that failed to provide any opportunity to reclaim property after eviction. A federal court ruled that the law violated due process, and a jury awarded $186,000 in damages. The firm’s appellate victory before the Fourth Circuit marked an important legal precedent and has helped spur conversations around potential statewide reform.
Zuckerman Spaeder was honored with the Beacon of Justice Award in 2024, 2022, and 2021. The firm’s pro bono work has also been honored by the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights (formerly known as CAIR Coalition) with its 2025 “Defenders of Due Process Award” and 2023 “Detained Children’s Champion Award;” by Legal Aid DC as a 2023 “Justice Partner;” and by The National Law Journal, which named the firm to the 2021 “Pro Bono Hotlist.”
The 2025 Beacon of Justice Awards will be presented at the NLADA Exemplar Awards Gala on September 24 in Washington, DC. To learn more, visit: https://www.nlada.org.
